Hard Problems, Approximate Solutions: Finding Balance between Math and Family Demands.
Thursday, January 14, 1 – 2:30 pm
Joint Committee on Women in the Mathematical Sciences Panel Discussion
Room 3003, 3rd floor, Moscone
Description: Virginia Woolf said it all in “A Room of One’s Own.” How do we find time for our
own mathematical work amidst intergenerational family demands? The challenges of balancing
family life (such as raising children, caring for elderly parents, providing child care for
grandchildren, or supporting a partner) with a professional life are myriad.
This panel, the first in a series of panels on this issue, will focus on two approaches to a
solution: successful institutional models that allow time for family responsibilities and
personal frameworks that allow time for career goals.
Panelists presenting the larger issues of family and work within academia include Mary Ann Mason
from the University of California Berkeley and co-author of the paper “Do Babies Matter? The Effect
of Family formation on the Lifelong Careers of Academic Men and Women,” Carol Hollenshead, former
director of the University of Michigan’s Center for the Education of Women and co-author of
“Developing and Implementing Work Family Policies for Faculty”, and Joyce Yen, Program/Research
Manager for the University of Washington’s ADVANCE Center for Institutional Change. Maura Mast
(University of Massachusetts Boston) and Dawn Lott (Delaware State University) will provide
perspectives on institutional and personal approaches to surviving the family-work crunch.
Organized by Kathleen O’Hara. Sponsored by the AMS-ASA-AWM-IMS-MAA-NCTM-SIAM Joint Committee on
Women in the Mathematical Sciences.

Closing the Gender Gap in Mathematics. An analysis of contemporary data has provided
new evidence discrediting the notion that females are innately less capable than males
at doing mathematics, especially at the highest level. Researchers Janet E. Mertz and
Janet S. Hyde of the University of Wisconsin-Madison report that girls in the United States
can match boys in mathematical performance and ability. Moreover, U.S. girls have caught
up to their peers abroad. Mertz and Hyde presented their findings in a perspective titled
"Gender, Culture, and Mathematics," published in the June 2 Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences. For more information, please see the press release and the article

during the first four decades of the twentieth century went to women, a proportion not achieved again until the 1980s.
Pioneering Women in American Mathematics:
The Pre-1940 PhD's is the result of a study in which the authors identified all of the American women who earned
PhD's in mathematics before 1940.

"Cross-Cultural Analysis of Students with Exceptional
Talent in Mathematical Problem Solving," published in the November Notices of the American Mathematical Society
shows that the percentage of girls on top International Mathematics Olympiad teams varies considerably by country.
Many top-ranked countries send more girls to the International Olympiads than does the United States. Also, a
large percentage of the faculty members recently hired by top-ranked mathematics departments were born outside
the US. These and other findings suggest that in the United States mathematical talented youths, particularly girls,
are not identified and nurtured.

The American Association of University Women has just issued a
report, Tech-Savvy: Educating
Girls in the New Computer Age 2000. Among their recommendations: we need a
new definition of "fluency" in information technology: "The new standard of
`fluency' assumes an ability to use abstract reasoning; to apply information
technology in sophisticated, innovative ways to solve problems across
disciplines and subject areas; to interpret vast amounts of information with
analytic skill; to understand basic principles of programming and other
computer science fundamentals; and to continually adapt and learn new
technologies as they emerge in the future. It is our job as a society to ensure
that girls are just as competent as their male peers in meeting these
standards." Sounds a lot like mathematics fluency to me. (From Dianne O'Leary,
AWM-Net, Apr 2000). (Posted 5-1-2000 to 7-30-2000.)

racial and ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities." The deadline for
proposals is August 3rd. (Posted 5-17-2000 to
