  • The MAA is now taking orders for its two new posters, Women of Mathematics and Ethnomathematics. Women of Mathematics was originated by Stan Burris as a counterpoint to IBM’s well-known, but now rather rare, Men of Mathematics poster. This poster was funded by the MAA and Sun Microsystems and has been distributed to mathematics departments across the country. Proceed to http://www.maa.org/news/102108poster.html for the order forms.
  • Now accepting applications for the AWM Workshop for Women Graduate Students and Recent PhDs at the upcoming SIAM Annual Meeting held in Denver, CO, on July 2009: See the workshops page for details on how to apply. - Deadline for applications is Jan 12, 2009.
  • AMS Announces Congressional Fellowship - The American Mathematical Society (AMS), in conjunction with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), will sponsor a Congressional Fellow from September 2009 through August 2010. Application Deadline: January 31, 2009.
  • The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) is seeking applicants for Biology, Physical Science and Mathematics Teaching Fellowships. KSTF Teaching Fellowships are intended to support individuals early in their careers who have the potential to devote a lifetime to improving math and science education. Application instructions can be found online at www.kstf.org. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at 5:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.
  • Now accepting applications for the IAS Women and Mathematics Program "Geometric PDE" to be held June 8-19, 2009. See http://www.math.ias.edu/wam/2009 for details on how to apply. - Deadline for applications is February 20.
  • The Prince George’s County Teaching Fellows is looking for talented, motivated career-changers and recent college graduates dedicated to joining us in changing the quality of education provided to the students of Prince George’s County Public Schools. This is an opportunity for outstanding individuals from all academic backgrounds to become part of an initiative that will allow them to train in the summer, become teachers in the fall, and earn a Maryland Standard Professional Certificate. We are currently accepting applications for our 2009 program, and interviews are limited. For more information about the program and to apply online, please visit http://www.pgcteachingfellows.org or call 301-780-2703.
  • "Cross-Cultural Analysis of Students with Exceptional Talent in Mathematical Problem Solving," published in the November Notices of the American Mathematical Society shows that the percentage of girls on top International Mathematics Olympiad teams varies considerably by country. Many top-ranked countries send more girls to the International Olympiads than does the United States. Also, a large percentage of the faculty members recently hired by top-ranked mathematics departments were born outside the US. These and other findings suggest that in the United States mathematical talented youths, particularly girls, are not identified and nurtured.
  • The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is pleased to announce that Fan Chung Graham will deliver the Noether Lecture at the 2009 Joint Mathematics Meetings. Chung, a professor of mathematics at University of California at San Diego, was selected for this honor because of her fundamental contributions to graph theory and combinatorics.
  • Now accepting nominations for the AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture prize, to be awarded at the 2009 SIAM Annual Meeting in July 2009: See the Kovalevsky Lecture page for more information. Deadline for submission of nominations November 1, 2008.

  • The African Mathematics Millennium Science Initiative (AMMSI), will organise a “Symposium on the African Woman and Mathematics” www.ammsi.org The meeting will be held November 29 – 30, 2008, in Girassol Indy Village, Maputo, Mozambique.
  • Science Debate 2008. Mark your calendar for the first-ever Science Debate conference, Innovation 2008: Renewing America Through Smarter Science & Technology Policy, on the beautiful campus of the University of Minnesota on October 20-21! A concerned citizens initiative cosponsored by AAAS, NAS, AWM and others posed the top 14 science questions to the Republican and Democratic Presidential Nominees, John McCain and Barack Obama. Read their full answers to these 14 questions about science developed by a multitude of science organizations.
  • Project NExT and the Young Mathematician's Network invite submissions of abstracts for a poster session to be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m. (room TBA) at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington DC.
