Math Talks at the AAAS Meeting

AWM Scholars at AAAS Meeting

AWM is pleased to announce a special opportunity for female mathematics students, both upper division undergraduate and graduate.

Up to six women students will be chosen to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting, February 17-22, 2000, in Washington DC. The students will serve as session aides for some of the sessions. In return, they will get free registration for the entire meeting. Furthermore, the AWM President, Jean Taylor, will organize daily seminars for these students, where they will discuss the content of the mathematical sessions that have occurred and are about to occur, both with each other and with some of the session organizers and speakers. Other sessions, such as those dealing with science policy, may also be discussed.

AWM will provide the housing for the students, in shared hotel rooms, from Thursday night through Tuesday morning; the students' home institutions will be expected to pay their other travel expenses.* Students are expected to arrive no later than Thursday night and leave no earlier than Monday afternoon (which is a national holiday, President's Day), and to spend most of the intervening time in intensive attending of talks and discussions. Students are welcome and encouraged to stay through Tuesday morning, although this is not required.

Any student applying for this program must submit, by email to awmpres@math.umd.edu, by December 20, 1999, the following items:

  1. Name, address, email address, telephone number, what college or university she attends, and what year student she is.
  2. An essay of 300-700 words, saying what she hopes to get out of the meeting and how it fits into her background and her future plans. The selection committee will look for evidence that the student is aware of the specific talks and sessions that will take place at this meeting; information on all sessions can be found on the AAAS website, and some information on mathematics sessions can be found on the AWM website.
  3. A list of courses taken and grades earned in those courses.
  4. The names of two faculty members ho she is asking to send letters of recommendation. These faculty members should be asked to email their letters of recommendation to the same email address, awmpres@math.umd.edu. The letters should give evidence that the student has the type of wide-ranging interests and abilities that are best served by the AAAS annual meeting.

*Applications that come with a commitment from the home institution to provide for the student's travel expenses (apart from housing) will be given higher priority. One form for such a commitment would be an email from the chair of the student's mathematics department to awmpres@math.umd.edu. AWM is applying for a quick grant to fund the program more completely, so it is possible that there will be travel money for those students unable to obtain a commitment from their college or university.

Students selected for the program will need to agree to write after the AAAS meeting, individually or in pairs, articles about it for the AWM Newsletter and the AWM website.

All questions, and all application materials, should be sent by email to awmpres@math.umd.edu.
